The island is huge, transport unreliable, difficult roads ... Do not expect to visit Madagascar in its entirety in a few weeks. You must choose your area. Whatever your program, Antananarivo is inescapable city of departure and arrival, place of passage between the north and south, east and west.

" The Big South "

Hot, weird and wild, Southern Madagascar is a cinematographer’s wet dream. Filled with the world’s most exotic flora and surreal landscapes, the countryside looks like no other place on earth. This is the Madagascar of the Discovery Channel, and the country’s most visited region. It’s mixed-up land where unreal forests of long-limbed spiny succulents compete with baobabs sporting trunks tattooed with psychedelic red and yellow swirls for the title of trippiest attraction. It’s also home to some fabulous national parks for trekking, including popular Parc National de l’Isalo, and beautiful deserted beaches with excellent snorkelling around pristine reefs.

" The Center and the East "

Drive thousand odd kilometres between Antananarivo and Toliara where the scenery is as stimulating and surreal as the culture. The RN7 might be Madagascar’s busiest highway, but to the barefoot Bara herdsmen, walking from as far as Toliara with nothing but a stick and the clothes on their back, it’s just a footpath useful for herding hundreds of zebu to market in Antananarivo.
Some parts of Central Madagascar feel as far removed from the conventional vision of Africa as possible. Glassy, terraced rice paddies juxtaposed against cool, misty mountains and thick-walled red huts constructed from crimson soil, make you think you’ve been transported to Southweast Asia. Meanwhile the expanses of green rolling hills and golden fields dotted with medieval villages and tidy rows of grapes look European. Hit a city, however, and you slam back into chaotic Africa. Brightly painted pousses-pousses (rickshaws), their drivers hustling hard for fares, compete with zebu carts and overpacked buses for space along rutted streets where touts hawk everything from price-guns to strawberries.
To really experience Central Madagascar’s chameleon-like ability to change, spend three days trekking trhough Betsileo villages.

The Highlights

  • Walking through cloud forests and tracking lemurs in Parc National de Ranomafana.
  • Summiting Madagascar”s second highest mountain, Pic Imarivolanitra, in spectacular Parc National d’Andringitra .
  • Checking out intricate woodcarvings by Zafimaniry artisans in the villages around Ambositra.
  • Supporting home-grown tourism by visiting the community-run Anja Reserve where lemurs are plentiful.
  • Riding Madagascar’s only rails on a train ride through the countryside from Fianarantsoa.
  • Lying out in the sun, swimming in the sea or looking for whales on gorgeous, and accessible, ile Sainte Marie.
  • Trekking through one of Madagascar’s best rainforests on the Masoala Peninsula.
  • Exploring the otherworldly, Jurassic Park-like scenery at Reserve de Nosy Mangabe while on a mission to find its golden beach.
  • Experiencing Madagascar at its most watery remote, boating down the Canal des Pangalanes, and see no other foreigners.
  • Listening for the eerie wail of the indri at popular Parc National d’Andasibe-Mantadia, not far from Antananarivo.

" The Central West Madagascar "
Central Madagascar is not Africa in the way we are thinking usually; highlands, strange village with Church " Bavarian like " shaped, Glassy, terraced rice paddies mountains and red impressive walls. Sometimes is like been in tuscany soft hills with nothing that land around you. Blu sky and black clouds like you see in Scotland. Are the Zebu and the shepperds that take you back to Africa even if they dress in a way you find no where else. In the big and small city of Madagascar you will find many reminds to different parts of Asia too, India or Thailand show up in small children playing in the streets. In the mountains instead Nepal appear sometimes, as per the rice terraces you might find in Indonesia. The west... the most remote and unaccessible area you might find, but price you with real and pure sensation of wilderness and " nature power " .. to be ready to be slow travel.
